This is the final design I decided to go with for the kid inventor. You can obviously notice I went with a different design for the hair but everything else pretty much stayed in tact like the weird looking suspenders.

similar thing for him as I was saying for the mechanic, instead of hiding all his stuff in pouches, maybe he has a special pack that looks different, Like a custom pocket design on his jacket, or special clips, or clocks, pocket watch, somethign to show he deals with time. Since he's the pilot he has to navigate through time. Shoot this is givin me ideas... But yeah, something more to show exactly how he pilots through time.
Oh and for presentation in a portfolio, put a ground shadow to suggest the plain, it's like icing on the cake for such a solid pose and stance.
